🧼 My Soap-Making Journey

I have developed a belief that I should create (and maintain) most of the things I use and be self-sufficient (Gandhi’s Poorna Swaraj, if you will). I have been able to do it for some things.

In this post, I am sharing with you, my journey of making my own soap.

Recipe:

Initially I went with a basic recipe of:

Water + Coconut oil + Lye (Sodium Hydroxide).

The first iteration:

Later, I tried adding various colours and fragrances. And instead of using only coconut oil, I changed to using vegetable oil (70%) + coconut oil (30%).

My setup:

  • Lye (Sodium Hydroxide)
  • Vegetable oil
  • Coconut oil
  • Hand-held blender
  • Mold
  • Kitchen scale
  • Container
  • Fragrances
  • Colours

Final result:

I was finally able to make a decent soap! Good for me!

Business:

When I was trying this stuff, I even had plans to start a soap-making business. 😄

I brainstormed the following brand names, each of them subconsciously derived from existing brands:

  • SoapX (SpaceX)
  • Soapranos (Sopranos)
  • SoapStudio (CokeStudio)

🤣🤣🤣🤣

I dropped this business idea later on. In retrospect, it’s good that I did, coz I now spend my time running Amer Academy, my own psychological counseling centre.

This soap experience has been extremely fulfilling, knowing that I am self-sufficient, atleast in this tiny way.

Do give it a try, as the process is just moderately challenging.
